Is it difficult to earn as an artist?
It can be, if you are not self motivated or committed to the
business of art as well as the creation of art. It is like any other
career as it takes discipline and hard work to make a name for
yourself and to gain the experience needed to progress in your
field of choice. Talent of course is a big factor, but marketing and
business skills are also important to selling your art.
How did you get started?
When the corporation I worked for merged with another
company I ended up being laid off. I saw this as an opportunity
to make art fulltime and pursue my passion. I haven't regretted
that decision.
What is your favourite painting and why?
Well, I'm not sure if you are asking for which is my favorite
painting of my own or if it is my favorite painting of someone
elses, so I'll answer both. I have several favorite paintings of
other artists, but Gustav Courbet's painting of the large oak
tree is truly a favorite. I saw it in the Museum of Art in Houston,
TX and was really awed by it. The name of the painting is, "The
Gust of Wind." I really love the movement in the tree and sky
that he was able to acheive. Here is a link to it: The Gust of
Wind
My favorite painting that I've created always changes. When I
feel I have truly captured what I intended to, then that painting
becomes my new favorite. Right now it is a painting I did on
linen canvas. It is called "The Thaw Begins" and depicts a winter
landscape with bright red berries covered with snow in the
foreground with a lake thawing in the background. I let a lot of
the linen canvas peak through which gives the painting a multi
layered effect.
How do you achieve a textured surface, what media do you
use?
I used acrylic mixed with a variety of acrylic media like beads,
pumice, sand, heavy gel, etc. I mostly apply these different
textures using a palette knife. Sometimes I paint over the
texture, sometimes I mix the paint in with the textures.
Sometimes I also use wireform that I gold leaf and add that to
the painting to create even another layer of texture.
How do you apply the paint to the canvas? What tools to you
use to paint with?
Well as mentioned before I use a variety of palette knifes to
apply very thick paint. I also use lots of different types of
brushes. My favorite brushes are flat square shaped brushes. I
also have a diagonal brush that has a variety of uses that I
usually bring with me when I paint in other locations.
Why does nature inspire you?
Well, why wouldn't nature inspire me? LOL . . . We live in an
amazing world with lots of wonderful things to touch and see. I
love to bring that to people and bring all of that wondrousness
indoors. Life affirming art is what I produce and want to leave
on the planet. There is plenty of darkness, sadness and sorrow
in our world. I am aiming to contribute joy and beauty to the
world. . . that is how I believe I am suppose to use my gift.

A couple of weeks ago Wanda was contacted by a school in
England that was interested in using her as a project for their
students. Here is an excerpt from their communications:
"We are in the early stages of the theme, pupils homework was to
research and find information about you and your work. The course
requires pupils to have a very strong understanding of context and
this must be shown through their final outcomes. I have been
speaking to our IT specialist and it may be possible to connect you
to our internet study centre named 'study wiz' (this is new to us
this year), that would allow discussion groups to be formed, which
would be fantastic! We would love to have some form of contact
with you in that way, also you would be able to view pupils work
and their personal responses. We would appreciate any input you
are willing to give. At the moment pupils are studying primary and
secondary sources, they will then explore media and study your
techniques, we are hoping to combine the nature that has inspired
them with some of your techniques. All pupils have a personal
response, we believe very strongly in the individual as an artist,
therefore some may even branch into weaving, or 3D or creative
textiles. Their personal journey is important to us and vital in their
development as artists." Katharine, South Chadderton School, near
Manchester, England "I have included some images of the pupils
work for you to view. Its shows the various stages of the creative
journey. Pupils started with researching your work and your style
in their sketchbooks, they then went on to using a variety of media
to record nature, producing graffitti stick drawings, rubbings and
various printing techniques. From these studies they will look
closely at your application of paint, use a view finder to select an
interesting composition and begin their painting. The pupils are
really enjoying the project and I will keep you up to date. Next
week I am planning to open a discussion about your work and
discover questions that they want to ask you."
Included are some of their study paintings.

Study Project:
December 2008 More News on the
Study Project: Last newsletter I
reported that South Chadderton
school in Manchester, England was
using me as the student's art project.
I feel very honored to have been
chosen. Here is the latest
correspondence from them:
Thanks so much for including us in
your newsletters, I read these to the
pupils and they are very impressed!!
The pupils are progressing well, some
are in the middle of their final
outcomes. They studied
Impressionism too, so their outcomes
are very diverse. I have set an
account up for you on studywiz, that’s
the schools learning site I wrote to
you about. On there pupils have asked
you a few questions. I was wondering
if you had the time to answer them.
They are eager to know what you are
working on now and generally what
its like working as an artist. I think its
a fabulous opportunity for them to be
in contact with you as they will
discover that being an artist is a
viable career path.
Hope you can contribute to the
discussion. Thank you for your time.
Katharine (teacher). Here are the
questions they posed to me and my
responses:
Have you always wanted to be an
artist?
I have always been interested in art
and making art, although I've been
interested in doing other things as well.
When I was young, I wanted to breed
and raise dogs. I outgrew that and
began to focus on making money. I got
my degree in marketing and worked for
a large corporation for most of my adult
life. My interest in art never waned
though. I loved looking at art, being
friends with artists and dabbling in art.
